www.southparkla.com: South Park Los Angeles Work Shop…bringing back artisan workshops

We at FLV LLC-TomichPorter Inc, have  had, for some time, a project which we felt very passionate about, and at the same time quite frustrated by:

We have been work shoulder-to-shoulder with a furnishings designer-manufacturer about the concept of opening a certified organic furniture boutique  congruent to an artisan workshop (upholstery, crafted furniture repair).

To flesh out the concept in this post would take too long-but-it’s an exciting idea which we believe in. That’s the passion mentioned above.

The frustration has been how to fit it into our model of biz-dev South Park L.A.

We feel like we have come up with the right bricks-and-mortar-ecommerce business-planning mix to make the dream of a certified organic furnishings boutique with an artisan workshop back-bone  a ‘fact-on-the-ground’ in South Park Los Angeles.  Of import: so has our client.

What we need to do now is engage the stake holders of South Park and flesh out the model into a narrative: From numbers and charts to words and communicative meaning.

Here is the bottom-line about making business work in South-Park: powerful marketing, backed by ongoing, financing to support that marketing. Not for three months, not for six months, not for a year-but for three. Any business model worth the hours put in to create it that relates to opening up shop in South Park L.A has to be filled with an arsenal of weapons supported by masses and masses of artillery- wars have been lost when there were not enough bullets left for the guns.

Meaning this: Don’t open up shop in South Park without understanding that you need a blended marketing approach of month in, month out targeted DMC (Direct Mail Campaigns), a best-of-breed website, a very potent ecommerce backbone, an ongoing core-focused email marketing campaign, and an overwhelming SEO (Search Engine Optimization) campaign.

There are so many good reasons why South Park Los Angeles is the right place to do business-and there are so many ways to make it work. Forbes Legacy Ventures LLC-Revanchist is comitted to South Park Los Angeles and our commitment and passion to this area-where we live and work, demands that we enunciate the facts as they are: Business is, to a degree, war: If your not on the offensive, if your not taking the castle-”by hook or by crook”- you will loose.

This was our first post in our blog: www.southparkla.com- vigor, action, and intent-the way forward

Full Disclosure: Martin, Brett and the FLV-TomichPorter Inc-Revanchist team author and manage http://www.downtownlabiz.com and http://www.recessionkillerblog.com

I live and work in our SouthPark L.A neighborhood. I am the CEO of a  micro v.c and an ecommerce-branding business development firm and we’ve just headquartered our offices in SouthPark in the last three months at The Hope Business Center. Nick Van Parys, proprietor of The Hope Business Center, is an exemplar of customer service and willingness to do what it takes to help business-in this case, ours. We look forward to future, fruitful activities with him. He has our respect and sincere thanks.

I’ve been wondering  what http://www.southparkla.com’s first post subject should focus on and I’ve decided that this, our first post, should be a clear statement of intent: My team and I (all the members of Forbes Legacy Ventures LLC/Tomich Porter Inc are partners-we have no employees and so are fully committed and invested with passion and commitment to build the best organization we can for ourselves and for the community).

Declaration of Intent: Forbes-TomichPorter Inc will be a powerful, centralizing force in the South Park Los Angeles District-actively developing business in the neighborhood and bringing positive mix of  businesses and merchants to our community.

We’re putting our money (literally) where our mouth is:  Two of our clients will be relocating to South Park Los Angeles as a direct result of our efforts (business planning, financing, branding et al…). Both are absolutely positive additions:

A full scale health and wellness center (A Revitalization Center) complete with yoga, massage, acupuncture, and a multitude of other wellness programs.

A true green-organic ‘human-safe’ organic contemporary furniture store: How true? We will be working shoulder-to-shoulder with Micheal Van Parys, renowned Green LEED Consultant (and also a resident and stake holder in South Park)to insure that when the product goes live on the web, via an on line store and when the  bricks and mortar retail store opens both the furniture and the process of creating the furniture is human-safe and fundamentally green in nature. It’s about building confidence and being a  pioneer in South Park Los Angeles.

We’ve only just begun and we would like you to join us: Residents, Realtors, developers, merchants, landlords, Home Owner Associations, all the stake holders in South-Park,  join us, talk to us, email us, call us, let’s discuss projects, and with vigor and grace build a tremendous community.

As for us: Our focus is  South Park and developing business in South Park. Period. Look forward to hearing from you- to connecting, engaging, and growing together.

Final Note: Are the posts at our various blogs (downtownlabiz.com, recessionkillerblog.com, southparkla.com, and our corporate blog, revanchistgroup.com) wordy?  Yes. Why? We assume our audience is sophisticated, educated, and engaged. We’ve got lots to say-hope you stay in touch and read on, and, importantly respond.

Optimists Rule

Optimists Rule: Summarized and Edited by Martin Cavanaugh Porter and Brett H Tomich with Forbes Legacy Ventures LLC (DBA The Revanchist Group).

Opportunities as other retreat

No risk taking= no business

“Business leaders do not have the hedgehog option open to them: curling into a ball until the danger appears to have past. Potential customers will pass them by.”

Opportunities arise during downturns when distressed sellers (businesses-added by Martin, Revanchist) are forced to offload valuable assets at bargain prices.

Brett: ” Can an ecommerce/online store add value to distressed businesses or/and be part of a turn-around strategy?”

Time to Innovate

During the depression of the 1930’s most businesses retreated-to their detriment. Other’s, like Proctor and Gamble spent heavily and wisely sponsoring radio programs-“soap-operas” building deep brand awareness.

Good Things Happen to Positive People
Primary reason why business leaders should project positivity right now: It works.

“Energetic and successful teams have often been inspired by leaders who radiate positive feelings and stimulate greater creativity.”

Bottom Line: Optimists Rule.

Of Note:

Brett and Martin are reading a terrific book called Glow by Lynda Gratton, professor of management at London Business School.
